Checked Baggage allowance | What is the checked in baggage allowance on Sri Lankan Airlines?

If you have already purchased a ticket, your current baggage allowance will be mentioned on your e-ticket.


SriLankan Airlines offers baggage under two concepts based on your routing and the partner airline who is partnering with us to fulfill our journey. The two concepts are as below;


1 Weight Concept - luggage rule provides a maximum total weight of luggage that must not be exceeded without paying an overweight baggage fee. For routings excluding destined to / from North, Central and South America (Applicable concept for baggage is weight concept). Majority of our flights are operated outside the North, Central and South American region and for those flights weight concept is applicable based on the International Air transport Association (IATA) regulations.


2 Piece Concept - luggage rules are when an airline allows a specified number of bags to be checked in, with specified size and weight limits for each bag. For routings destined to/from North, Central and South America. (Applicable concept for baggage is piece concept). In the North, Central and South American region SriLankan Airlines operate with code share and interline partners from and to USA and Canada.

SriLankan offers baggage under two concepts based on where you are flying from. Read other FAQ sections to understand Weight Concept and Piece Concept.

The maximum single item weight cannot exceed 32kg under any circumstance.

Checked Baggage allowance | I have purchased my ticket through a travel agent. What will be my baggage allowance?

Your baggage allowance is usually indicated in your ticket.

However, please note that travel agent baggage allowances may be different from travel agent to travel agent.

Please contact your respective travel agent to check the Free Baggage Allowance relevant to your ticket.


Checked Baggage allowance | Is there a special baggage allowance for students?

Yes Srilankan.com offers the Student special offer for students who register under the program. This offer is available only for flights fully operated by SriLankan Airlines and for pre- registered students with Srilankan.com. Registration process will take around 7 Days if you have all the documents required.

Checked Baggage allowance | Is there an extra free baggage allowance for migrant visa passengers?

There is no extra free baggage allowance specific for any visa type.

The baggage allowance specified on your ticket will apply for your journey.

If you wish to purchase additional baggage, you can pre-purchase additional baggage at discounted rates online!


Checked Baggage allowance | Can I submit my baggage one day before the travel date?

If you are travelling with checked baggage on SriLankan Airlines you will be able to check-in your baggage three hours before the departure time until the check-in counters close (one hour before the departure of your flight).

Some airports may provide the facility to store your baggage at the airport until you check-in your baggage at the counter.

Currently, this facility is not provided in the Colombo Airport. You may check with the relevant airports by calling their help desk to find out if the baggage storage facility is available with that airport.


Checked Baggage allowance | If I don’t have any cabin baggage, will I be entitled to more checked baggage?

No this is not possible. The cabin and checked baggage cannot be combined as they are provided separately.


Checked Baggage allowance | What will happen to my baggage allowance if I upgrade to business class?

You can bid for your Business class upgrade via our bid upgrade program.

In the event your bid is accepted through the above program, and you are upgraded to Business Class, you will be entitled to an additional 10KG of baggage allowance above the free baggage allowance you had under your original ticket, prior to winning the upgrade. This allowance will only be applicable for the upgraded segment/s. This allowance will be valid up to a maximum of 50Kg total Baggage allowance. E.g. if your original economy baggage allowance is 30 Kg it will be enhanced to 40 Kg if you win the bid.


Checked Baggage allowance | I have changed my ticket online. Before the change I had 40 Kg checked baggage allowance and now after the change, my allowance has changed to 30Kg. How can I obtain the 40 Kg similar to what I had before?

The general economy class baggage allowance is 30Kg and the business class baggage allowance is 40 Kg. However, at the airlines discretion enhanced baggage allowances may be given under special promotional campaigns, under the applicable terms and conditions for such offers. However, once you make a change to a promotional ticket you will get the applicable baggage allowance for your newly reissued ticket based on the fare conditions prevailing at that time.

Checked Baggage allowance | Will my baggage allowance differ according to the fare family I select when I book on SriLankan.com?

Fare families are a group of service offerings which includes the fare, FlySmiLes points and different levels of flexibility in terms of changes to the tickets. However, your baggage allowance is based on the travel class you select. Time to time, there may be instances that the airline may offer enhancements to the baggage allowance based on ongoing promotions at the time of purchase.


Checked Baggage allowance | In addition to the standard cabin baggage what are the other carry-on items permitted?

In addition to the standard cabin baggage, you can carry the following items in the cabin.


a) One Laptop

b) One lady’s handbag, purse or pocket book, duty free item

c) One overcoat, wrap or blanket

d) One umbrella or walking stick (may restrict as per Airport Operator’s policy)

e) One small camera and/or one pair of binoculars

f) One Cabin Bag (56 x 36 x 23 cm) containing infant's food for consumption in flight together with infant's toiletries and disposable items such as nappies weight not to exceed 5Kgs (11 lbs.)

g) One infant's carrying basket or fully collapsible stroller/pushchair (could be carried only if space available in Cabin. If not, as checked baggage)

h) Special items permitted by SriLankan Airlines that may require prior arrangement, notification, and/or specialized screening requirements or additional charges (e.g. Urns containing human ashes).

Checked Baggage allowance | Are there any place that passengers can measure their baggage weight?

Yes .This facility is available at the departure lobby , prior to check –in counters in some airports. You may check with the airport information desk to confirm if the facility is available in your desired airport.


Checked Baggage allowance | Are duty free items also calculated in cabin baggage allowance?

No duty-free items are not calculated in cabin baggage allowance.

If you are carrying Duty-free items, you are allowed an additional 2Kg apart from your normal cabin baggage allowance.

However, you cannot use this duty-free weight allowance as a cabin baggage allowance to carry any other baggage.


Items not allowed in cabin baggage | What are the guidelines for carrying Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG) in cabin baggage?

Complimentary checked baggage allowance for Loyalty passengers | I’m a FlySmiLes member. What is my baggage allowance?

The SriLankan Airlines Frequent Flyer program FlySmiLes allows several member benefits including extra baggage allowances. You can find out more on the FlySmiLes baggage allowances and benefits by visiting FlySmiles website

Oversized baggage policy | What is the procedure to carry a special item on an additional passenger seat?

This feature is known as extra seat for comfort. You may carry items such the once indicated below by pre-purchasing an additional seat under “Extra Seat for Comfort” facility.


a) Musical instruments
b) Works of art
c) Electronic equipment
d) Diplomatic baggage
e) Valuable baggage


All requests for the above facility must be made prior to the flight and a window seat must be allocated for the purpose. You may contact our 24 Hour Contact Center on +94117 77 1979 (Within Sri Lanka : 1979) or email your request to reservations@srilankan.com for more information.


If such a baggage is not accepted in the cabin on a seat due to certain restrictions and/or limitations, it can travel as a checked baggage if it has appropriate packaging.


Only a maximum weight of 75 kgs can be carried as cabin seat baggage under “Extra Seat for Comfort” feature.

Your free baggage allowance will not be used for the above as this is a separate service.


Oversized baggage policy | What is considered as bulky baggage and how can I check-in bulky baggage?

Any baggage that exceeds the standard dimensions of above 158cm and weight 32Kg(70lbs) is considered as bulky/oversized baggage and shall not be accepted as checked baggage.


Oversized baggage policy | Can I take my TV as checked baggage?

Maximum dimensions are 158cm, therefore for checked baggage which exceeds 158cm charges shall apply.

You can take up to a 50’ TV free even if exceeding 158cm dimensions within your baggage allowance. Any TV over these dimensions should be sent as cargo.

SriLankan airlines does not accept fragile items as checked baggage at the airport unless they are properly packed in original factory sealed cartons or containers with protective lining designed to ship such items.


Oversized baggage policy | I am travelling on a multi-leg itinerary in different cabin classes. What is my baggage allowance?

Your baggage allowance is indicated in your e-ticket. Please refer to our Baggage Information page for more details.


This differs according to the airline and the cabin you travel.

Baggage with Partner Airlines | What are the rules and regulations for baggage when travelling with partner airlines?

SriLankan Airlines provides you the facility to book your travel on srilankan.com which includes flight combinations with our partner airlines. For codeshare flights once you check-in your baggage with SriLankan Airlines your baggage will be end to end handled. You will not have to check you’re your baggage again at the transit airport.


However, in the instance where the partnership is an interline partnership, please check if one or more of below conditions apply. In such instances you will have to manually check- in baggage at the transit airport.


a. For passengers holding two different travel documents while travelling via India (except from Delhi). This is since passengers require transit visa to India due to non-availability of transfer facilities
b. Beyond the first point of stopover (when exceeding 24 hours)
c. On an unconfirmed/waitlisted sector
d. When connecting time is less than the minimum connecting time (MCT)* requirement
e. Beyond the point at which the passenger requests his/her bags
f. When the transfer involves two airports in the same city
g. Beyond the point up to which excess baggage charges have been paid
h. Beyond the point at which state regulations require customs clearance
i. The Arrival of the Delivering Airline’s flight on one day and the Receiving Airline’s flight on the next day and not within 12 hrs.
j. Baggage interlining not possible between CMB and HRI Airports.

Baggage with Partner Airlines | Are there any airports that do not arrange interline baggage to domestic airports?

Baggage with Partner Airlines | I’m connecting to a SriLankan Airlines flight from another airline flight. Will my baggage allowance be the same?

This depends on the marketing airline (The airline who from which you purchase the ticket). We operate flights with our codeshare partners. At the time of purchase your baggage allowance on the partner airline and SriLankan will be indicated on your ticket. However, if you purchase 2 different tickets, they will indicate the baggage allowances only relevant to the respective itinerary.


Baggage with Partner Airlines | Can I check-in online and reclaim my checked-in baggage at the end of the entire journey? I have two connecting flights made in two different bookings/PNR’s.

SriLankan Airlines operate flights with two different type of partners called code share and interline.


Codeshare flights
If it is a code share flight the flight number will a number with 4 digits after the UL prefix. E.g. SriLankan Airlines (UL2341) operated by Malaysia Airlines when traveling from Colombo to Sydney. For code share flights you can collect the baggage at the final destination in your travel itinerary.


Interline flights
Interline is a relationship between airlines which allows one airline sells services to a customer that are provided by another airline. You can identify an interline portion of travel on a ticket by checking the airlines code. Unlike the codeshare flights interline flights will show the other airlines code. E.g. VN662 (Vietnam Airlines Number) when traveling from Colombo to Hanoi via Singapore. In such cases you will have to manually check-in your baggage at the interlining airport.


Online checked in Passengers, having baggage to check-in need to drop off Baggage at the designated baggage Drop off counter and need to get the baggage tagged as appropriate to the ticketed destination and obtain the baggage claim portion/s as reference and/or claiming purposes in case they get mishandled for an unforeseen reason/s. If your two connecting flights are under different bookings still you will have to Check-in baggage manually.


Online check-in when travelling with bags | I have done online check-in/I have checked in at the kiosk. How do I check-in my baggage?

If you have checked-in online or at a kiosk, you don’t have to wait in the normal queue to drop off your baggage. Please proceed to the baggage drop-in counter for a speedier process. Please speak to one of the passenger service personnel at the airport to locate the baggage drop-in counter.


Online check-in when travelling with bags | What is child and Infant baggage allowance?

The general baggage allowance of an adult will be applicable for child tickets as well.

Infants who do not occupy a seat receive a free baggage allowance of only 10 kg of checked baggage.

On routes to/from North, Central, and South America (USA and Canada), under the Piece Concept, the free baggage allowance for an infant is 1 piece up to 23 kg and 158 cm (62 in).


Sports equipment | What is the procedure to follow when carrying sport equipment as baggage?

Medical equipment | Is there a special baggage allowance for passengers with special needs?

Passengers who need assistance from their mobility aids will be allowed to carry them free of charge over and above the checked and cabin baggage allowance irrespective of their cabin class. Medical equipment | I have some medical equipment’s. Can I carry them on board?

Any medical equipment which are to be carried onboard need to get the approval from the SriLankan Airlines medical center by filling the Medical Information Form. Please contact our 24 hour Global contact center for further details.

Medical equipment | Am I allowed to carry my own food due to medical reasons?

Generally, food items are not allowed to be brought and consumed onboard.


We are happy to provide you refreshments as per your medical or dietary requirements. Please specify your meal type from among our large variety of meals available. You can make this selection just as you book your flight online.


If you are a Business class passenger, apart from our curated menu, you can also pre-order your preferred meal from our special menu.


If you are travelling on Economy class, we also have a large variety of carefully prepared dishes that you can choose from which we will be happy to serve during your flight with us.

Baggage with irregular shapes | Am I allowed to carry Zamzam water onboard?

If you’re travelling to perform Haj or Umrah, you may bring up to six liters (6 kg) of Islamic Holy Water (or ‘Zamzam water’) in your checked baggage.


This allowance is provided free in addition to you free baggage allowance indicated in your ticket. In bringing Islamic Holy Water (or ‘Zamzam water’) it must be packed adequately to ensure that the container is properly sealed. The allowance is only applicable if the SriLankan Airlines flight is originating from Jeddah (JED).



Baggage with irregular shapes | I have stuffed (puff) toys that is not fitting in to my baggage. How can I carry them when I fly with SriLankan Airlines?

You can either take such items as your checked baggage or as cabin baggage. However, this will depend on the dimension and the weight of your baggage. Please read more about oversized baggage in our Baggage Information to see if your stuffed toy is falling under the oversized baggage category.


Baggage with irregular shapes | I will be hand carrying my wedding dress when I am traveling with SriLankan Airlines. Are there any restrictions in doing this?

Yes, you can take your wedding dress as carryon baggage as long as the dimensions are within the carryon baggage dimensions allowed by SriLankan Airlines.

Each piece of hand baggage must weigh no more than 7 kg and measure no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) or a total of 115 cm (L+W+H).

If your wedding dress is not within the above carryon baggage dimensions the wedding dress must be lodged as checked baggage.


Baggage with irregular shapes | Can I carry a carpet as checked baggage allowance, is there a standard size?

If the carpet fits inside your Free Baggage Allowance, this will be allowed. The dimensions are given as below.


  • Checked baggage   -    62 in (158cm) (L+H+W)
  • Cabin baggage        -    45in (115cm) (L+H+W)


Baggage with irregular shapes | If I carry plants/ flowers what are the procedures, I should follow?

Bringing plants into Sri Lanka
In case of bringing live plants, parts of plants and plant products, it is required to submit a Customs declaration on arrival and upon the receipt of it, the Customs Officer after making necessary endorsements in the declaration directs the passenger to the Plant Quarantine Office at BIA Arrival Terminal for their inspection and approval for Customs clearance. At this stage passenger should produce documents such as Phytosanitary Certificate and license to the Plant Quarantine Officials. After obtaining the quarantine approval, the items can be cleared from the Customs on payment of applicable Customs Duty and other levies.

Taking plants out from Sri Lanka
All forest produces are subjected to obtain prior approval from Department of Forest Conservation.


Protected Plants
The plants listed under the Protected Plants list in FFPO: Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance are prohibited to be taken out of the country
Eg: Kothalahimbutu (Salacia reticulata)

Baggage with irregular shapes | What is the procedure to carry Human ashes?

As per SriLankan Airlines policy, human ashes must be carried as Carry-on baggage. For human ashes to be accepted, below criteria must be complied.


a) The ashes must be carried in an urn and the urn must be properly secured in the cabin baggage.

b) The passenger carrying Human Ashes must carry the death certificate as proof of document of the deceased person.

c) Prior notification to the SriLankan Airlines Security Department should be made.

d) Transit and destination requirements / formalities need to be taken care by the passenger carrying Human Ashes.


No special seating is required when carrying human ashes. If you are connecting to another carrier, the concerned carrier’s rules will apply to the carrying of Human Ashes.

Baggage with irregular shapes | Can I carry smart luggage on board?

If your baggage is a smart baggage and need to be checked in,

Baggage with installed lithium batteries:


For baggage with non-removable batteries. Batteries must contain no more than 0.3 g lithium metal or for lithium ion must not exceed 2.7 Wh (Watt-hour)


For baggage with removable batteries. Batteries must be removed if baggage is to be checked-in. Removed batteries must be carried in the cabin.


The Baggage must be carried in the cabin only if the weight and size of the baggage is permissible in the cabin. Lithium Battery need not be removed.


Lithium Battery Installed Device

Passengers who wish to carry such items must contact the SriLankan Airlines Dangerous Goods Unit via Telephone on +94 19733 2455.


Baggage with irregular shapes | Can I carry Antiques/statues/treasures/old books?

The following items are restricted to be exported from Sri Lanka:


  • fire arms, ammunitions, explosives and weapons;
  • plants, fruits, birds and their products;
  • antiques;
  • pharmaceuticals and medicines, except for personal use;
  • goods for commercial or trade purposes, except trade samples.

You must check the country specific regulations with the Customs authorities to obtain necessary preapprovals.


Travelling with pets | If I want to take my pet what is the procedure to follow?

Domesticated animals such as cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and ornamental fish are accepted for carriage as checked baggage. There are restrictions according to the type of the aircraft and the country you are flying to/from. Please contact our Global call center for more details on this.


Animals of an unusual size or nature such as monkeys, snakes etc. cannot be carried as checked baggage. They should be referred to our Cargo office as they need to be carried in the Cargo compartments.

Travelling with pets | If I want to take my pet what is the procedure to follow?

Pets:
Before bringing any pets into Sri Lanka, prior authorization must be obtained from the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH). Information can be obtained from:


- Chief Animal Quarantine Officer, 41 Morgan Road, Colombo 2, Sri Lanka. Tel. or fax: 94 11 2448683; or

- Animal Quarantine Officer, B.I.A., Katunayake, Sri Lanka. Tel. or fax: 94 11 2253430; or

- www.daph.gov.lk

Cats and dogs must be accompanied by a veterinarian good health and rabies certificate issued in country of origin and issued by the veterinary authorities. A stamp fee of LKR 5.- and a Customs fee of LKR 250.- for each dog must be paid on arrival.

Due to the outbreak of bird flu, the import of pet birds from the following countries is prohibited: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China (People's Rep.), Chinese Taipei, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong (SAR China), India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland (Rep.), Israel, Japan, Korea (Rep.), Lao People's Dem. Rep., Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Nepal, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russian Fed., Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Togo, United Kingdom, Vietnam.

Delay baggage | What is the procedure to locate my delayed baggage

The first step is to inform the Baggage information counter in the airport arrivals area. To report delayed baggage, you can also call the baggage counter by calling +94 19733 3366 from anywhere in the world.

Once you report your delayed baggage the Baggage information counter will provide you with a File Reference (e.g. ATLXS13166).


You can follow up on the progress by using the baggage tracking tool.

Delay baggage | Once we make the complaint how to find lost baggage file reference?

When you report your delayed baggage our baggage information counter will provide you with a File Reference this is an alphanumeric code 10 characters. To follow up on your delayed baggage request you can use our baggage tracking portal.

Claiming lost & delayed baggage | What is the procedure for claiming lost or damaged baggage?

For all baggage claims, please refer to the ‘baggage information counter’ at the airport arrivals to obtain a file reference number for your baggage claim.

Claiming lost & delayed baggage | I have reported my delayed or lost baggage to the airline. How do I trace my baggage?

If you have already reported the delayed or lost baggage and received a reference number, please enter the reference number on our baggage tracking tool.


When you enter the last name and the file reference number indicated on your Property Irregularity Report (PIR), you can check the status of your delayed baggage online via the World Tracer tool.

Claiming lost & delayed baggage | I have left an item onboard how can I inform this and track the item?

If you have misplaced your baggage, you can contact us via the below contact details.


Alternatively, you can also visit our baggage information desk at the airport to claim your missing baggage which have been left Onboard.

Dangerous items | What is known as unacceptable baggage?

The following items are considered as unacceptable baggage by the airline.


a) Articles which, in the opinion of Carrier, are inadequately packed or unsuitable for air carriage due to its weight, size or nature such as sharp items/objects and/or any irregular metal objects over 5kgs of weight.
b) Live animals except dogs, cats, household birds and other pets will be accepted for carriage subject to Carrier's regulations.
c) Firearms and ammunition other than for hunting and sporting purposes.
d) Fragile or perishable items, money, jewelry, precious metals, silverware, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents or samples.


Prior to travel, it is advisable to contact your local ticket office or our global call center for more details on the above items.



Dangerous items | Can I carry a power bank when I travel with SriLankan Airlines

Power banks are considered as spare batteries. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent any short circuits. Each person is limited to a maximum of 20 spare batteries.


  1. Spare Lithium Batteries/Power Banks must only be carried in cabin Baggage. These are not allowed in checked baggage.
  2. If the rated power is less than 100Wh, power banks can be carried without approval. Each person is limited to a maximum of 20 such items.

Dangerous items | What is your policy is on taking drones as baggage?

If the lithium battery voltage is less than 100W, you can carry Drones in your -cabin baggage.


Please power off the battery prior to storing the device.

SriLankan Airlines advises passengers not to have any valuables in checked baggage for the safety of your valuables.


General guidelines and best practices | Can I carry fragile items in checked baggage?

SriLankan Airlines do not accept fragile items as checked baggage at the airport unless they are properly packed in original factory sealed cartons or containers with protective lining designed to ship such items. A list of such items is as below.


a) Musical instruments such as guitars, sitars, drums etc.
b) TV sets (LCD, LED), radios, VCR 's etc.
c) Ornamental items such as vases, figurines, trophies and ceramic ware
d) Arts & crafts such as paintings, sculptures and antiques
e) Photographic equipment such as large cameras, projectors
f) Recreational and sporting goods such as fishing rods and model aero planes
g) Precision instruments such as microscopes, oscilloscopes, polygraphs
h) Glassware including mirrors
i) Breakable toys
j) Statistical and calculating machines

General guidelines and best practices | Can I carry cigarettes in checked-in baggage?

It is forbidden to bring cigarettes into Colombo by rule. For other countries, please check the rules and regulations pertaining to your destination as it depends on the custom regulations of that particular country.

Only 100ml of water or any other liquid is allowed to be carried in carry-on baggage from Colombo. Please check the rules and regulations pertaining to your relevant airport with regards to carrying such items. Bring in food into the cabin from outside is not allowed. Pre-paid baggage | What is the maximum weight which can be obtained through website for travel from/ to CMB?

  • Pre-paid baggage block rate up to 50kg block
  • Passengers can purchase per kilo rate up to 100KG

Pre-paid baggage | Can a passenger purchase pre-paid excess baggage multiple times?

  • You can purchase pre-paid excess baggage multiple times
  • However, to purchase pre-paid baggage for the second time, you will have to contact our call center or ticket offices

Pre-paid baggage | Can a passenger purchase prepaid baggage and for further excess baggage, purchase excess baggage at the airport?

  • Yes. You can purchase additional excess baggage at the Airport at a per kg rate.

Pre-paid baggage | Once prepaid baggage EMD issued can the passenger date change/ route change?

  • Passengers will be allowed to change the date and flight on same route only
  • Passengers who modify their routes or their passengers are no longer eligible for free date and flight changes for pre-purchase baggage

Pre-paid baggage | If the passenger did not have excess baggage at the time of checking as much as he has purchased, can the balance be refunded?

  • All refunds must be requested at least 24 hours prior to the flight's planned departure. Within 24 hours of the scheduled flight, you will not be able to get a refund for your pre-purchased baggage

Pre-paid baggage | Due to flight disruption if UL flight is cancelled, can the prepaid EMD reused on another UL flight or different carrier?

  • No. At involuntary situation, EMD will be permitted to be refunded and any applicable refund fee will be waived off
